Contact the Fire Chief or appointee to request a Burning Permit for rural, non-recreational open air burning (permit is free)
No permit needed for cooking/warmth devices or small supervised recreational campfires anywhere in the municipality, or for any burning in the restricted built-up area beyond those exemptions.
Built-up areas prohibition (Section 2)
Open air burning shall be strictly prohibited within the built-up areas as identified in Appendix "A".
Cooking/warmth exemption (Section 3)
Notwithstanding the provision of section 2, the use of an enclosed device or charcoal installation shall be permitted, for the purpose of cooking, obtaining warmth or controlling insects, within the built-up areas as defined in Appendix "A" and within municipal boundaries, without a permit.
Recreational campfire exemption (Section 4)
Notwithstanding the provision of section 2, open fires may be set for recreational purposes within the built-up areas defined in Appendix "A" and within municipal boundaries, without a permit, when such burning consists of a small confined residential campfire, provided that: i) it is supervised at all times; ii) only clean dry wood or charcoal is burnt and iv) there is a bucket of water or a garden hose at the site.
Rural permit requirement (Section 9)
During the fire season, a municipal Burning Permit approved by the Fire Chief or his appointee shall be required for any open air burning in rural areas outside the restricted areas, as defined in Appendix "A".
No fee / 7-day validity (Section 10)
There is no fee for acquiring a municipal Burning Permit. Each permit will be valid for a maximum period of seven (7) days.
Fines (Sections 11-12)
A fine of $50.00 shall be imposed by the Municipality for any open air burning that has taken place in rural areas, outside of the restricted areas defined in Appendix "A", without the property owner having previously acquired a municipal Burning Permit. A fine of $100.00 shall be imposed by the Municipality for any open air burning that has taken place in the restricted areas defined in Appendix "A".
