Recreational campfires under 61cm x 61cm do not need a permit if Section 3.3 conditions are met. Agricultural/non-recreational or special burns require submitting an Open-Air Burn Permit application (on the Township website or at the Municipal Office) at least 7 working days in advance
Landowner must call fire dispatch at least 30 minutes before ignition.
General prohibition (Section 3.1)
From and after the passing of this By-law, no person, either directly or through agents, servants or workmen, shall set fire to burn or cause or permit to be burned in the open-air within the Township of South-West Oxford any material or building or structure whether standing or demolished or any part thereof subject only to the exceptions contained herein.
Agricultural/non-recreational burn permit and setbacks (Section 3.2)
(a) No person shall conduct an agricultural or non-recreational open-air burn within the boundaries of the Township of South-West Oxford unless permission has been given by the Chief Fire Official in the form of a Fire Permit (see Section 4). iii. Burns shall be located at least 30 meters (98.4 feet) from any combustible structure, vegetation, materials and/or public utilities. Burns must be located at least 150 meters (492.1 feet) from any occupied building. iv. Open-air burning is permitted during daylight hours only.
Recreational burning conditions (Section 3.3)
i. Recreational burning may be conducted between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. only; ... ix. Recreational burns are not permitted when the wind speed exceeds fifteen (15) kms per hour or during rainy or foggy weather or at times when a smog alert has been declared or a fire ban has been implemented.
Smog days / burn ban void permits (Section 3.6)
Fire permits will be considered void on known smog days, or on days that the Township has issued a burn ban. The appropriate Federal and/or Provincial Government agency shall be used as the source for smog and weather-related information. The Chief Fire Official reserves the right to ban fires on any day.
Fee deferred to Rates and Fees By-law (Section 4.1)
Fire permit fees shall be in accordance with the Township's Rates and Fees By-law.
Application lead time (Section 4.4)
All requests for an Open-Air Burn Permit shall be made at least seven (7) working days in advance by completing and submitting an Open-Air Burn Permit application (available on the Township website).
