Per-burn (verbal Fire Department approval required before each burn)
Determine which of the three fire departments services your property (St. Marys, Perth East, or Biddulph-Blanshard/Lucan Biddulph) and contact that department directly
For the St. Marys-serviced area, notify the Fire Chief at least 30 minutes before burning and obtain verbal approval, using the Schedule A container designs (stone circle, wheel rim, or metal burn barrel under 205 litres) for contained fires.
Schedule A - Regulations for Campfires, Contained Site Fires and Burn Barrels
Contained Site - Stone Circle/Cement Ring: A circle of stones or a cement ring style of burn pit may be used. The area around the circle of approximately 25cm (10 inches) wide... should be clear of dry or dead grass of other combustible materials that may be ignited by heat radiated through the stones or cement. The size of the circle should be the approximate size of a wheel rim (60cm/24 inches in diameter).
Schedule A - Burn Barrel
Barrels must be metal not exceeding 205 litres (45 imperial gallons) in size. Barrels should be drilled with holes in the sides to allow airflow to the fire. A mesh, metal screen should be laid across the top to aid in the suppression of sparks and embers that may be produced by the fire.

The Fire Chief must be notified of the intent to conduct an Open-Air Controlled Burn at least 30 minutes prior to ignition... verbal confirmation of approval for the controlled burn from the Fire Department [must be obtained before proceeding].

Open-air fires are permitted only between sunrise and sunset.

The open-air fire must be supervised by a responsible person at all times... The fire must not be left unattended until it is completely extinguished.
Material and weather restrictions (live permit form referencing By-law 18-2014)
Burning of petroleum products, materials containing rubbish, or materials that create obnoxious odors is prohibited... fires allowed only when weather conditions are favorable, ensuring that the fire will not spread.

The owner shall be solely liable for any and all damage resulting from the open-air burn.
