Purchase the Open Air Burning Permit online via the Township's own web form (puslinch.ca/forms/open-air-burn-permit/) — current fee $29.00 plus a 1.75% online convenience fee — or apply at the Township Office at least 1 day in advance

Submit written owner permission if applicable

Keep the permit available and comply with all setback/size/hour/wind/Smog Alert conditions.

What the by-law says

Permit required (Section 2(1))

No Person shall set or permit a fire in Open Air in the Township without a current valid Permit.

Application timing (Section 3(1)(a))

submit a complete application in the form provided by the Township at least one (1) day prior to the Open Air fire;

Permit validity (Section 3(2))

A Permit is valid for the current calendar year in which it is issued.

Wind and Smog Alert thresholds (Section 4(1)(a)-(b))

Any Person who is issued a Permit shall not set or permit a fire in Open Air: (a) when the wind speed exceeds sixteen (16) kilometers per hour; (b) during a Smog Alert;

Burn hours (Section 4(1)(c))

other than between the hours of 7:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m., unless otherwise permitted by this By-law or expressly authorized by the Fire Chief;

Size and setback limits (Section 4(1)(f)-(i))

(f) that exceeds one (1) metre in diameter and height; (g) other than burning unpainted wood, organic materials, ground cover and paper products; (h) that is within fifteen (15) metres of any building, structure, hedge, fence, Highway or overhead wire; (i) without a five (5) metre radius around the perimeter of the Open Air fire that is free and clear of combustible article and ground cover;

Permit exceptions (Section 5(1))

A Permit for an Open Air fire is not required for supervised cooking food on a Barbeque, Gas-Fired Outdoor Campfire Devices, Cooking Fire and Outdoor Fireplace.

Set fines (Schedule to By-law 45/14)

Set or permit fire without a current valid Permit — Section 2(1) — $200. Set or maintain a fire not in accordance with Permit Conditions — Section 2(2) — $200. Light or ignite an Open Air Fire under the age of 18 — Section 2(5) — $250.
