Calendar year (Jan 1 - Dec 31, or date of purchase to Dec 31)
Per occurrence, in addition to the annual permit
Apply to the Chief Fire Official for an Open Air Burning Permit ($20/year) or a Special Burn Permit ($25/occurrence) for circumstances not covered by the standard permit
Comply with hours (6pm-8am), setback, wind, and size conditions.
Permit required (Section 2.1)
No person shall set or maintain a fire in open air unless a permit or special permit has been issued by the Chief Fire Official under this by-law.
Permit validity (Section 2.2)
A permit is valid for the year in which it was issued, from January 1st to December 31st, or from the date of purchase to December 31st of that year.
Burn hours (Section 3.1)
Fires are only permitted to be set and maintained in the time period from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. No daytime burning is permitted between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Setback (Section 3.2)
Fires must be located a distance of not less than 7.5m (25 feet) from any building or structure, property line, tree, hedge, roadway, overhead wires or any other combustible article.
Wind threshold (Section 3.4)
No person shall start any fire outdoors, other than a campfire or while utilizing an outdoor cooking device, at any time when winds are currently or forecast to be in excess of 16 kilometres per hour.
Size limit (Section 3.6)
Fires are restricted to one single pile at any one time, ensuring that the pile is less than 2m (6 feet) in diameter and less than 2m (6 feet) high.
Incinerators prohibited (Section 2.12; Definitions)
The use of incinerators is prohibited. ... Incinerators have not been allowed since January 1, 2015 and are not eligible for permits;
Fees (Sections 6.1-6.2)
The fee for an Open Air Burning Permit issued under this by-law shall be twenty dollars ($20.00) or as identified in the Fees and Service Charges By-law as established and amended from time to time, whichever fee is the successor. The fee for a Special Permit issued under this by-law shall be twenty-five dollars ($25.00) for each separate occurrence, in addition to the annual Open Air Burning Permit.
