Can I burn today in Mono?
Mono’s by-law does not set out what each fire danger rating allows, so this page cannot tell you whether today is a burning day. Today’s rating is beside this, and the fire hall below has the answer.

A rating is not permission. Mono requires a permit, and a fire ban can be declared at any time. Town of Mono (Municipal Office) decides — not this page.
Until December 31 of the current year
Review the Fire Permit Bylaw
Apply online via the Town's CityWide Solutions portal (guest checkout available, no account required) or in person at Town Hall during office hours (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.)
Provide burn date/period, location (with emergency/street number posted and visible), responsible fire department, adult attendant's name, and extinguishing method
Approval is emailed as a PDF permit attachment.
Permit required (Section 1)
REQUIREMENT FOR A FIRE PERMIT: Except where permitted under this by-law, no person shall set a fire in the open air in the Town of Mono until a fire permit has been obtained from the Municipal Office.
Permit validity (Section 1(c))
A fire permit is valid only for the period specified on the permit. A valid permit period may not extend beyond December 31st of the current year.
Council/Fire Chief discretion to ban (Section 1(e)-(f))
Council may at its discretion, cancel or suspend a fire permit at any time and may ban the lighting of fires out of doors at any time. A permit holder shall extinguish any fire started under the permit and refrain from lighting fires out of doors during a fire ban. The Fire Chief may issue a fire permit during a ban imposed by Council.
Wind threshold and burn hours (Section 4)
a) No person shall ignite an open air fire prior to 1 hour after sunrise or later than 1 hour prior to sunset unless such burning consists of a small, confined fire, supervised at all times, and used to cook food on a grill. ... e) No open air fire shall be maintained during fog or when the wind is in such direction or intensity (greater than 5 km/hr) so as to cause a decrease in visibility on any highway or roadway or the spread of fire through grass or bush. f) No person shall ignite a fire under overhead wires or within 5 metres of any building or tree line.
Maximum burn volume (Section 4(h), added by 2019-47)
No more than 1 cubic metre of material is to be burned at a time on lands of 1 acre or less and no more than 3 cubic metres of material on lands larger than 1 acre.
Prohibited materials (Section 4(d))
The burning of (i) household garbage, petroleum products (including plastics), rubber tires, paint, asphalt material, mixed demolition debris, chemical wastes or any other materials considered to create excessive smoke or pollution, or (ii) standing grass or (iii) standing buildings, is specifically prohibited.
Exemption (Section 5)
EXEMPTIONS: Fires lit for cooking purposes on a barbecue are exempt from the provisions of this bylaw.
