Recreational/campfires do not require activation, but brush and agricultural fires must be activated by phone before burning.
Settlement-area device restriction (Section 3.1)
Open air burning is restricted to an enclosed manufactured, non-combustible outdoor fireplace with a maximum size of 1m in any direction, within the limits of Lanark Village, hamlets of Middleville, Hopetown, McDonalds Corners, Watsons Corners and Elphin as identified in Schedule A of this By-law.
Permit required (Section 3.2)
No person shall set or maintain an open-air fire without first having obtained the necessary permit from the Fire Chief.
Maximum wind (Section 3.9.1)
Maximum wind - Open air fires are prohibited when wind speeds exceed 20 kilometres per hour, according to Environment Canada.
Fire Season hours (Section 3.13)
During Fire Season (April 1 and October 31), no person shall start the fire at least 2 hours before sunset and shall extinguish it no later than 2 hours after sunrise. 3.13.1. Outside of Fire Season, burn times are not regulated.
Fire Ban / Fire Ban Level I definitions (Section 1.1.19-1.1.20)
"Fire Ban" means a total fire ban and shall prohibit all sources of open air burning. "Fire Ban Level I" means only burning in an outdoor incinerator, chimineas, or campfire/recreational fire are permitted. fireworks displays are prohibited.
Permit fee deferred to Fees and Charges By-law (Section 10.2)
Each permit application must be accompanied by the applicable fee as set out in the Township of Lanark Highlands current Fees and Charges By-law.
Flying lanterns prohibited (Section 11.2)
No person shall set maintain, or permit the ignition and release of a ignited flying lantern at any time in the Township of Lanark Highlands.
