Can I burn today in Gordon/Barrie Island?

Fire season (By-law 2009-15, Section 1(a))

Fire season: Period from April 1 to November 30 of each year.

Fire Permit required (By-law 2009-15, Section 2(a)-(b))

A Fire Permit will be required once a year for a Burn Barrel. A Fire Permit will be required for each: Grass Fire, Brush Fire and Controlled Fire.

No fee unless investigation required (By-law 2009-15, Section 4(a))

There will be NO FEE for the issuance of a Fire Permit unless the Fire Chief is required to investigate a complaint at which time Council may levy a fee for the Fire Permit.

Enforcement referral to Fire Chief (By-law 2009-15, Section 3(a)-(b))

Complaints which cannot be handled by the Clerk/Treasurer will be forwarded to the Fire Chief of the Gore Bay Volunteer Fire Department who will be required to investigate the merits of the complaint. If a permittee is in contravention of this by-law or by-law 2009-16 The Fire Chief is required to make recommendation to the Clerk/Treasurer to revoke the permit.

Burning hours (By-law 2009-16, Section 1)

No fires shall be set out of doors in the Municipality of Gordon/Barrie Island between the hours of eight o'clock in the forenoon and six o'clock in the afternoon of each day of the week within the Municipal protection area described as the limits of the Municipality of Gordon/Barrie Island.

Container and brush pile sizing (By-law 2009-16, Section 4)

a) All outside fire shall be contained in a metal or masonry container, no greater than 45 gallons with a wire mesh top made of no larger than one-half inch wire mesh. b) Notwithstanding the provisions of section (a), burning of brush outside of open containers shall permitted in rural and or undeveloped areas provided that, (1) the pile of brush is no larger than six feet square and six feet high and (2) the brush is cleared from the property upon which it is being burned; and (3) the fire shall be minimum of fifty feet from any building or structure and a minimum of twenty five feet from any fence, brush and other combustible material and liquids.

Restricted Fire Zone and high wind prohibition (By-law 2009-16, Section 7)

Except as herein before provided, no person shall set a fire of any kind out of doors in the Municipality of Gordon Barrie Island and no fire of any kind out-of-doors in the Municipality shall be allowed to burn during a Province Restricted Fire Band and during a high wind.

Penalty (By-law 2009-16, Section 10)

Any person who violates any of the provisions of this bylaw shall for every offence, incur a penalty of not more than one thousand dollars ($1000.00) exclusive of costs and such penalty shall be recoverable under the provisions of the Provincial Offences Act.
